Monday Minute--Leadership Thought (Replace What You’re Losing)

Every habit we form is filling some need. People smoke cigarettes to calm anxiety and play video games to relax. Today’s challenge is to figure out what need(s) your habit is filling and start brainstorming new, healthier ways to fill that void.


If you’re trying to cut back on time you spend on your phone, take a moment to think about what you like doing on your phone, and why. Do you spend hours scrolling through Instagram? Ask yourself why. What need is that action fulfilling, and once you stop the action, how will you replace that need?


More often than not, it seems that people take up bad habits to cope with stress. So a good place to start with this challenge is to consider how you can add some extra relaxation and tranquility into your life.


Think of it this way—once you take steps to live a happier life overall, you won’t feel the need to fall back on bad habits in order to cope.
